There is a one word, hand printed ascription "Alamo" in the bottom left center of the photograph. I assume the placement of the child is for scale.

Opened Dec. 20, 1886. 487 seats at the orchestra level; 343 in the balcony; and 500 in the gallery. Closed in the 1930s. Razed in 1954. Replaced by the H.L. Green department store. View is WNW from Alamo Plaza. Reuter building (opened in 1892) across Crockett Street to the south is not present. The street would appear to be under construction, perhaps due to the wood block paving project (1889-1891). Note the round sign on the sidewalk in front of the building that reads Grand Opera House.

The exposure window is framed by the absence of any automobile advertising on the Herpel-Gillespie buildings to the immediate NE of the chapel. The dealership moved out in 1926-27 to their new building at Houston and Bowie. The other aspect of the frame is that the Steves Auto Building (1908) is still visible to the south of the chapel. The 1934 city directory will reflect there are no, residences, businesses or even addresses in existence on the east side of the 300 block of Alamo Plaza with the exception of the Alamo.

The convento wall indicates the photograph is prior to the Grenet construction (1877) and I would argue it is during the period of rock and rubble sale by the city of San Antonio, as the cart station can just be seen on the extreme right side of the photograph. The wheel and runner scrapes can clearly be seen as the carts made the wide turn to align with the cart station to pay the 50 cent charge.
