Taken from, most likely the building along the east bank of the river, south of the bridge, occupied by The Southern Messenger. The photograph showcases the Commerce Street Bridge and the Riverside Building. The bridge is the fourth one at this location. It is a lenticular pony truss bridge built in 1880 by the Berlin Iron Bridge Company of East Berlin, Conn. and replaced by a tee beam bridge in 1915. The Riverside Building, now renamed the Clifford Building was built in 1891 and designed to evoke memories of a river steamboat.

The Hertzberg Clock is present in the photograph in front of the Hertzberg Jewelry Company at 329 W. Commerce. It will be moved in to a new location at the Gunter Building on Houston Street in 1910. The electric light bulb decorations, the bicycles and the women’s fashions indicate a turn of the century period. The cyclist approaching the camera could be a San Antonio Police Officer.

However, the photograph clearly indicates a three-story building on the south side of Commerce which the 1873 map does not detail, while the 1877 Sanborn map does reflect a three-story building at Cocarron (sic) and Commerce.
