Must be prior to 1877 as the three-story stone Dauenhauer building is completed there by late 1877. Note how the iron-tired wheels of the hacks, wagons and other vehicles shatter the sidewalk.

The church occupies the probable second site of San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo) before it was moved to its present location in 1724. The cornerstone of St. Joseph’s was laid in 1868, and it was completed in 1871. The steeple was added in 1898.

The photograph showcases the Commerce Street Bridge and the Riverside Building. The bridge is the fourth one at this location. It is a lenticular pony truss bridge built in 1880 by the Berlin Iron Bridge Company of East Berlin, Conn. and replaced by a tee beam bridge in 1915. The Riverside Building, now renamed the Clifford Building was built in 1891 and designed to evoke memories of a river steamboat.

The Hertzberg Clock is present in the photograph in front of the Hertzberg Jewelry Company at 329 W. Commerce. It will be moved in to a new location at the Gunter Building on Houston Street in 1910. The electric light bulb decorations, the bicycles and the women’s fashions indicate a turn of the century period. The cyclist approaching the camera could be a San Antonio Police Officer.

However, the photograph clearly indicates a three-story building on the south side of Commerce which the 1873 map does not detail, while the 1877 Sanborn map does reflect a three-story building at Cocarron (sic) and Commerce.

In the foreground just south of the Silver King Saloon and behind (west) of the Frost Bank building is a type of rental unit known as a “corral.” On the NW corner of Main Plaza is the L. Wolfson (dry goods) building and to it, moving east, is what was at one time, the White Elephant Saloon, which by the time of the photograph had been purchased by Wolfson in an expansion. The massive Kampmann Building sits on the NE corner of Commerce, Soledad and Main Plaza. Both the City Council and the District Courts had been tenants at one time. The building north on Soledad with the twin mansard towers is the former Bexar County Courthouse. The park, the northern portion of which can just be seen in the middle of Main Plaza means that the new Bexar County Courthouse (1897) on the south side of Main Plaza has been completed.

The first doorway on the left is a stairway that leads to the second floor of what will be Harris’ Vaudeville Theater, the scene of several famous shootings.

Taken from a building just east of Navarro showcasing the widening of Commerce Street and particularly the raising and moving of the Alamo National Bank at the SW corner of Commerce and S. Presa. It is said that the 8000-ton building was raised by 1800 screw jacks, placed on 1600 rollers and then pushed back 17 feet. That much is fact. The legend says it was all done while not disturbing bank business inside. Another part of the same legend says once it was on the rollers it was drawn over and let down onto blocks of dry ice which as they evaporated allowed the building to settle.
